Reaching Out: A Home of Dignity and Opportunity in Hoi An Posted on September 15, 2025July 13, 2026 By Sierra Campbell, Director of Brand and Content (small.news) — Reaching Out was founded in Hoi An, Vietnam, with a simple but powerful vision: To support people with disabilities in building meaningful, independent lives. Mai Quyen and her ex-husband—who has been living with paraplegia since age 15—saw firsthand how exclusion from work limited opportunities for so many in Vietnam. “What sets us apart from other arts and crafts shops in the area is that we are a social enterprise,” Mai Quyen explained. Together, they imagined something different. A community where creativity, inclusion, and dignity were at the center of business. From a Small Workshop to a Thriving Small Business Reaching Out began in 2000 as a small handicraft workshop. Young people with disabilities learned skills, gained confidence, and found stable jobs. However, Mai Quyen said that challenges in management, marketing, and product quality were significant. “The early years were challenging… but through continuous learning, training programs, and the invaluable support of international volunteers, we gradually overcame these obstacles and built Reaching Out into what it is today: A sustainable business, and above all, a family,” Mai Quyen said. Unlike charity-based models, Reaching Out thrives on business principles. Artisans take pride in their work, and customers choose their products for quality and value. Within the organization, staff are empowered through profit-sharing, recognition for creativity, involvement in planning, leadership training, and engagement in community life. A Teahouse of Silence and Connection In 2012, Reaching Out expanded with the Reaching Out Teahouse, a serene space in the heart of Hoi An Ancient Town. Staffed entirely by professionals who are hearing impaired, the Teahouse offers more than fine teas and cakes. It also provides an experience of silence and the richness of non-verbal communication. Mai Quyen explained that guests leave not only refreshed, but inspired by new ways of connecting. Changing Perceptions, Inspiring Communities At its heart, Reaching Out blends social and economic goals. The enterprise has shifted how the community perceives the abilities of persons with disabilities, showing that leadership, independence, and excellence are within reach for all. “We are proud to have inspired visitors from around the world, and to have changed how our community perceives the abilities of persons with disabilities,” Mai Quyen explained. She also thanked her staff, saying, “The success of Reaching Out belongs to our dedicated staff.” Success isn’t just about big bursts.
