Why Many Small Businesses Fail: Cash Flow Capacity Catch 22 Posted on October 6, 2025October 8, 2025 By Kekeletso Nkele, small.news Assistant (small.news) — Time and money are limited resources for many small businesses and the main resources that many owners wish they had more of. If they just had more time or more money, their business would finally take off. This was a commonality found among the 400 small business owners we interviewed. When asked three questions: – What are you trying to accomplish?– What’s getting in your way?– Why is it so hard to grow a small business? Many owners said, “If I just had more time. If I just had more money.” But to get more time, you need more money, and to get more money, you need more time. This phenomenon is called the Cash Flow Capacity 22. To grow a business, you need to invest time and money. The two main things that feel the most limited are the most important, especially regarding the growth of your business. The Cash Flow Capacity Catch 22 The trap that many small business owners find themselves in is needing more time or money. It sounds easy. If they had more money, they could hire help, invest in effective systems, and concentrate on activities that drive growth. If they had more time, they could close more deals, deliver better service, and build stronger customer relationships that generate more revenue. But this isn’t a resource problem, it’s a strategic problem disguised as a resource problem. Why Small Businesses Fail The failure of a small business is not based on the intelligence of the owner but rather their management of resources. Poor time and money management are the most prevalent in a Catch 22. A cycle that owners may find themselves in involves: – Action Frenzy: Frantically running around, trying to do activities that don’t contribute to the growth of their business. – Planning Paralysis: The lack of action due to a lack of resources. The Solution How does one escape this cycle that seems never-ending? The possibility of getting more time isn’t available in this reality, but getting more money can be possible. The methods we recommend don’t involve bending reality but instead working with it. – Be realistic regarding the time and money you actually have access to.– Be focused and intentional about where you spend your time and money. – Be disciplined and say no to good opportunities so you have the time to say yes to great opportunities. But the main method is to get to a point where you are saying no 80% of the time and yes only 20% of the time. This way, you are using your resources to get better results.
