Building Resilience As A Part Of Sustainable Business Posted on January 12, 2026June 3, 2026 By Viera Marčeková, Dance Teacher At Soma Dance (small.news) — It was one of those harder days. A busy stretch had piled on responsibilities, and the long-term stress finally caught up with me. I was tired and overwhelmed. I was preparing a dance workshop, trying to update my older business logo, and searching for a good topic for my blog. After a long time, I finally recorded a video meant to bring people closer to my work and help promote the workshop. All I needed to do was cut it. But the editing program refused to cooperate, and what should’ve taken ten minutes stretched into two frustrating hours. By that evening, my patience was gone. Then I paused and asked myself: What do you actually teach other people?Ironically, the workshop I was preparing focused on movement-based somatic techniques to reduce stress and anxiety. So I stopped, took a deep breath, closed the computer, and went for a half-hour walk. I focused on the world around me, my steps, my breath, and the environment. By the time I returned, the technical problem no longer felt impossible. And during that walk, a new article topic came to me naturally. Simply by choosing to act differently, I gained distance from the situation, something I desperately needed. When Hard Times Come Many small business owners experience evenings like this. Moments where nothing works, deadlines are close, sales are dropping, and a child suddenly gets sick. These are challenges we cannot avoid in entrepreneurship. Just like in life, we can either let them scare us, exhaust us, and drain our motivation, or we can learn to navigate them and grow through them. Not everyone naturally knows how to face challenges constructively. The good news is that, like most skills, it can be learned step by step. Of course, sleep, healthy habits, discipline, and good time management matter. But long-term, small business owners need one more essential skill: mental resilience. Resilience is the ability to handle difficult situations and adapt to change. Resilient people don’t avoid problems or collapse under them; they face them. Not because they experience less stress, but because they know how to use internal and external resources to get through tough moments. And often, they come out stronger. What Resilient People Tend to Have in Common Problem-solving skills. They look at challenges rationally and focus on what can actually be done. Healthy focus.Instead of wasting energy on what they can’t control, they put their attention on what they can influence. Emotional regulation. They recognize emotions without letting them take over. Even when sadness, fear, or anger appear, they don’t let momentary feelings drive their decisions. Self-compassion.Rather than blaming themselves for every imperfection, they treat themselves with understanding, even when things go wrong. Personal resources. They know what nourishes them: walks, meditation, jogging, playing with a pet, and intentionally make space for these practices. Social support. They understand they can’t and shouldn’t do everything alone. They maintain strong relationships and aren’t afraid to ask for help when they need it. Mental resilience is one of the most valuable tools we can cultivate, both as humans and especially as small business owners. It helps us think clearly, make conscious decisions, and treat ourselves and others with humanity. And that, ultimately, creates a meaningful and lasting impact on our businesses.
