Fresh from the Ground Up: Paul Masilo Story Posted on May 18, 2026July 15, 2026 By Kekeletso Nkele, small.news Assistant Paul is a part of the Silver Lining global community thanks to support from Nedbank’s SimplyBiz. (small.news) — Some businesses begin with market research. Some begin with capital. Freshmo began with a moment during a religious fast that left its founder… reaching for a small, simple solution. That inconvenience, minor on the surface, turned out to be a founding insight. The large bottles on the shelf were foreign in origin, scale, and spirit. Masilo, a father and dreamer from Boksburg on Gauteng’s East Rand, saw not a gap in a market, but a gap in a story. Africa’s story. A Fast, a Frustration, and the Spark that Followed From that quiet inconvenience, Freshmo was born, becoming the first black-owned, township-based manufacturer of mouthwash sachets in Africa. It was a first for the continent, the township, and a generation of innovators who refuse to wait for permission to lead, Masilo says. But Freshmo’s beginnings were challenging. Masilo had no chemical engineering background, no laboratory, and no clear roadmap. He carried only the belief that township communities deserved products designed for them and that Africa could create its own formulas. “Create your own formula.” – Gauteng Economic Department, to Paul Masilo The Door that Opened Everything When Masilo approached the Gauteng Economic Department, the response was daunting yet clarifying — a challenge, not a handout. He searched and persevered until one door opened: that of Professor David Katerere, a respected pharmaceutical scientist at Tshwane University of Technology. Under Professor Katerere’s mentorship, through trial and persistence, the Freshmo formula emerged. A colleague funded the initial chemicals, an incubation hub in Sasolburg provided lab space, and the prototype was refined until it was ready, small, powerful, and proudly African. Certified and Proudly South African Freshmo passed stability testing and was independently assessed by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) through the University of Limpopo’s Green Biotechnologies Research Center. It carries the Proudly South African endorsement, a validation of both its quality and its origins. Sachets in Pockets, Vision in Hand Certification is not the same as a shelf. Even with a validated, endorsed product, Masilo found that the path to retail was its own obstacle course. Retailers closed their doors. Buyers hesitated. Airlines, hotels, and shops listened politely, but commitments were slow to come. Masilo kept entering boardrooms with sachets in his pocket and vision in his heart, emphasizing convenience, affordability, and dignity for the township consumer, often underestimated and overlooked. Gradually, attention grew: a retailer placed a 6,000-sachet test order, customers found Freshmo online, and communities embraced the brand’s Spearmint and Peppermint flavors as their own. More than a Product Today, Freshmo is both a product and a statement. It proves African manufacturing can succeed, rebukes the notion that innovation must be imported, and reminds us that townships always had ideas — they just needed the infrastructure to bring them to life. Freshmo’s ambition is continental: to become Africa’s number one oral hygiene and personal care brand on shelves from Boksburg to Nairobi, Lagos, and Lusaka. For small business owners who are told their markets are too niche or their formulas too untested, Freshmo offers more than advice; it offers proof.
