Do It Afraid: Lessons on Building a Small Business With Heart and AI Posted on September 21, 2026September 17, 2026 By Latoyia Banks, Owner and Operator of Aaden & Addi Sweet Treats (small.news) — My name is Latoyia Banks, owner and operator of Aaden & Addi Sweet Treats, a confectionery and dessert business located in Homestead, Florida. We started our brand approximately five years ago, and this journey has been nothing short of what many small business owners experience. We’ve had highs, lows, victories, disappointments, lessons, and plenty of moments when we had to stop, regroup, and figure out our next move. One of our greatest challenges has been defining the right path that leads not only to success, but to consistent and sustainable growth. Like most small business owners, we desire success. We want the ideas we dreamed about to become something real, profitable, and lasting. However, I have learned that having a great idea and being willing to work hard does not automatically create a successful business. The Trouble With One-Size-Fits-All Support Many programs, organizations, consultants, and resources are designed to help small businesses. While I believe many of these resources have good intentions, navigating them can sometimes create more delays than solutions. I do not say this to discourage anyone from seeking assistance. I say it because, far too often, resources for small businesses can become oversaturated. So many businesses are seeking help that the support provided can become generalized instead of tailored to an individual business’s specific needs. That has been one of my biggest challenges. Every business is different. We may experience similar problems, but what works for one company may not work for another. Sometimes programs are structured in a way that requires the business owner to fit into the program instead of letting the program address the business’s actual needs. Turning Passion Into Consistent Sales I believe I speak for many small business owners when I say that we have great ideas, commitment, passion, and a willingness to work. However, one of the biggest challenges is learning how to turn that passion and hard work into consistent sales. You can generate interest. You can create leads. You can build a beautiful product. But at some point, you have to learn how to turn those leads into paying customers and those customers into loyal supporters of your brand. In business, you can have an amazing idea, but I believe a much bigger force drives sales, expands our customer base, and grows our company. Success Is Timing, Not Luck I don’t believe success is simply luck. I believe it is a matter of timing, precision, preparation, consistency, and being ready when the opportunity presents itself. It takes patience. It takes the willingness to fail. It takes planning, adjusting the plan, trying again, learning from what didn’t work, and moving forward. Sometimes you have to fail forward. You have to develop the will to keep going even when the results don’t look like what you expected. In other words, it takes resilience. Running a small business is definitely not for the faint of heart. AI: A New Advantage for Small-Business Owners Today, however, small business owners have something previous generations of business owners did not have at this level. did not have at this level: artificial intelligence. With AI tools now at our disposal, I believe small business owners can finally see a little more light at the end of the tunnel. We can ask many of the questions that we once depended on programs, consultants, classes, and organizations to answer. We can use AI to help organize ideas, create strategies, develop systems, analyze problems, improve marketing, structure operations, and explore solutions. One of the greatest advantages is access. You don’t always have to wait until the next scheduled workshop. You don’t have to wait days or weeks for a consultant to respond to a question. You can have an idea today, begin developing it today, revise it, implement it, see what works, input the results, make adjustments, and continue building. That is powerful for a small business owner. I am not saying that AI replaces human connection, relationships, mentorship, or professional support. Those things are still extremely valuable. What I am saying is that AI can lighten some of the stress and anxiety that comes with waiting for answers and depending entirely on outside resources. It gives small business owners another tool and more control over conceptualizing and developing their own vision. My Own Highs and Lows For me, this journey has had many highs and lows. There have been moments of excitement and moments of disappointment. There have been times when I could clearly see where we were going and other times when I had to trust the vision even when I couldn’t see the next step. But I keep going because I believe in what we have created. I also understand that many of the challenges we face are meant to develop the character, wisdom, patience, discipline, and skills necessary for the next level. Every season of business requires something different from you. What you learn during the difficult seasons may become the very thing that helps you survive and succeed during the next season. My Message to Other Small-Business Owners So my message to other small business owners is simple: Have fun along the journey.Never lose hope.Trust the vision God has given you. Develop sincere relationships instead of focusing only on selling products. People remember how you make them feel. Customers are people before they are transactions. Use the tools that are available to you. Create. Recreate. Adjust. Learn. Try something different. But never stop. Sometimes you need to pause and reflect. Sometimes you need advice. Seek wisdom, but be careful about receiving too many opinions because too many voices can cause you to lose confidence in the vision you were given. And sometimes, you have to do it afraid. Fear does not always mean stop. Sometimes fear means you are stepping into something you have never done before. You will never know what is in store for you if you never take the chance. Build the Business That Is Authentically Yours Finally, remember this: If you created the game—the business idea—you get to create the rules. You do not have to build your business exactly like everyone else. You don’t have to become another version of your competitor. There is value in simply being authentically you. I don’t believe God gives us a vision simply so we can compete with someone else’s vision. God gave the vision to be fulfilled. So build it. Learn from it. Pray over it. Work for it. Change what needs to be changed. Celebrate the small victories. Learn from the failures. Build genuine relationships. Use the tools available to you. And above all, never stop. Finding the Joy Building a small business may require blood, sweat, and tears., sweat, and tears, but somewhere in the middle of all of it, don’t forget to find the JOY. For Aaden & Addi Sweet Treats, JOY is more than a word. It represents what we want people to experience through our brand, and it reminds me of what I want to hold onto throughout this journey. The road may not always be easy. The timing may not always make sense. The results may not always come when you expect them to. But keep believing, keep learning, keep creating, and keep moving forward. Trust the vision God gave you. Do it afraid. Fail forward. Build relationships. Use the tools available to you. Be authentically you—and enjoy the journey in blood, sweat, tears, and JOY! Running a small business can be lonely, but it doesn’t have to be.
