Keys to Success: What a Piano Studio Taught Me About Building a Business

I had a natural talent for it, and judges from the National Piano Guild often encouraged me to become a professional concert pianist—traveling the world and performing on grand stages.

Although I loved the music, the solitary life of a concert performer did not feel like my true path. I sensed that my calling was in the classroom. Becoming a teacher changed my life. Instead of performing alone under the spotlight, I found joy in helping elementary and middle school students discover their own voices. Together, my school choirs performed at the State Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion and earned top ratings at regional music festivals. Watching my students use music to grow in confidence and contribute to their community was deeply rewarding.

The Science Behind Music

Later, I returned to school to earn a master’s degree in education, focusing on mathematics. For my thesis, I explored how music influences the way people learn math. The research confirmed what I had witnessed in the classroom: music does more than inspire creativity—it actively supports learning.

Whether students are preparing for a community performance or a National Piano Guild evaluation, I expect them to give their full effort. I believe in their ability, and I want them to believe in it too. What began as a childhood love of piano keys has become a lifelong mission: helping students strengthen their minds, work together, and pursue excellence.

Faith, Perseverance, and Purpose

Building a small business has shown me that success does not follow a single formula. Every business is unique, and although many programs, consultants, and resources promise results, what works for one small business owner may not work for another. Lasting progress requires discernment, patience, and a clear understanding of the vision behind the work.
